I
hope you enjoy these
historical and fascinating photographs of German Luftwaffe pilots and
the Helferinnen of World War
Two. There were NO women aviators in Germany. The
Luftwaffe Helferinnen were
auxiliaries as in WAAF (Women's Auxiliary Air Force) in the UK. They
provided support in everything from communications to maintenance but,
like the WAAF, they did not fly. There were "celebrity"
German pilots like Hanna Reitsch, Melita v. Stauffenberg
(sister-in-law to the Hitler-assassin on July 20th) and a few others
who were
already pilots
before
the Nazis came to
power. But there was no comparable program for training or
utilizing
women as pilots. There were no German female pilots in
uniform.
When you click on any small photograph on this page, a window will
appear that allows you to view the photo of the WWll
Luftwaffe and/or Helferinnen in a larger format. Also, in the
window that appears, copyright information is noted and
details about the
aviation photograph if available.
For your convenience the
WW2
German aviation photographs are grouped into two sections:
